CHAPTER 2 SUMMARY BY MOLLY WILKERS In chapter two they touched on multiple subjects that were very informative. This chapter touched on the counselor as a therapeutic person, personal therapy for the counselor, the counselors values, and the issues faced by beginning counselors. What I found informative about the counselor as a therapeutic person was to make life oriented choices, radiate a joy for life, and to develop real relationships with your clients in order to motivate them to develop the same life enhancing qualities. What I found interesting about personal therapy for the counselors was to remain open to self evaluation to help develop your abilities and skills as a professional. In the section referring to the counselors values I thought that there was a lot of good values on the list but the one trait I thought was most important for the counselor to abide by was to be able to live in the present. Which was also a subject touched upon in the section about issues faced by beginning counselors along with many other difficult issues that are going to be a struggle to overcome. Overall this chapter was a great stepping stone in learning about the theories of counseling.
In response to molly, I also liked the part where it said "that personal therapy for the counselors was to remain open to self evaluation to help develop your abilities and skills as a professional. That is very true, because if you aren't aware of yourself then how can you help someone else become aware of themselves.
in response to Molly, I also liked about the counselors values, about making life orientated choices. I believe that it is also important for counselors to remain open to self evaluation so that they can motivate their clients and help them to the best of their abilities.
In response to Molly, I like how you talked about Also found this interesting about personal therapy for the counselors was to remain open to self evaluation to help develop your abilities and skills as a professional.I found this interesting because can help you seek a new skill set you did not known you have. And also like how the therapy help motivate their clients as much as possible.
After reading Chapter 2 I consider it to be the foundation. It addressed the relationship between the counselor and the patient and strongly expressed that the counselor should always be real. It also stated and I agree completely that "the counselor's role is to create a climate in which clients can examine their thoughts, feelings, and actions and to empower them to arrive at their own solutions to problems they face" pg 23. It also said that the counselor should be open to self evaluation and that in order for a counselor to be effective they should have a set of characteristics that help them be better. I personally like the one when it says that effective therapists are authentic, sincere, and honest that says it all in itself. Chapter 2 also speaks on the fact that as a counselor you shouldn't impose your views or values on the patient. Everyone has their own core values and views and it is never okay to force yours onto someone else. It also spoke on developing your own style because their is no one way to be a great counselor in fact, their are all types of methods and styles and it is your duty to find one that works for you and is effective in the helping process. So all in all as a counselor/therapist your job is to be real, build a trusting relationship with the client, and be a supportive listening ear in their process of improving.
In reply to Niesha, I agree with your response that everyone has their own values and beliefs as therapists and should keep their views to themselves, but some clients are dependent on other people to give them answers in order for them to make their own choices. Im not saying that it is right, but in some cases, that may happen. Then it depends on the therapist to tell them that they have to make their choices based on what they feel is right, and not by what they may hear from a therapist or others. As you have said, it is the therapist job to be real, and hopefully can give them the correct advice.
in response to Niesha when u quoted the text "the counselor's role is to create a climate in which clients can examine their thoughts, feelings, and actions and to empower them to arrive at their own solutions to problems they face" I agree strongly with this statement because of my personal experience and I hope that if you were to go into counseling of some type you would follow by this statement no matter what because it is very important to make your client feel comfortable and that you are listening to them and their feelings.
In reply to Niesha,I do agree with you when you said it is very important for the therapist to make your client feel comfortable and that you are listening to them and their feelings.I think this important because it helps the client to raveled much darker problems. The client knows you are always going to be their.
after reading chapter two it gave me a clearer view on how counselors touch different subjects.the chapter touched on the things the couselors have to face with and the different concepts of counseling. In chapter two said how when counseling you have to put your personal views and opinions to the side in order to help your client. your personal views shouldnt effect other peoples lives. this was overall a good chapter to read it helped my understand the basics of counseling.
In response to Danielle's comment i liked how you mentioned what the book says, that counselors should put their person views and opinions to the side because the only view that is important at that moment is the clients because they are seeking help. I also liked the point you made that the counselor's opinion should not effect the clients' to the point where they feel awkward and uneasy that they don't want to open up to you.
In response to Danielle, I also found The Counselor's Values and Therapeutic Process interesting. But I am in total opposition It was baffling to me because I think you have to have a skill that requires you to put all of your core values and beleifs aside and to aquire this skill it demands many years of experience in my opinion; For example what if you are a chistian Counselor and your client is a violent devil worshipper whom constantly speaks of evilness every session. How do you handle a situation as such?
In response to danielle, i believe that it is true that the counselor does have to put there opinions and values to the side. I say that because if the counselor constantly has something negative to say about what the client is talking about nothing is going to get solved just because they look at things different.
This chapter talks about many challenges that therapists face in the beginning of their career, as well as when they become a professional in their career. One of the challendges every therapist go through is breaking a barrier of silence with the client. Allowing them to become comfortable in the setting they are in, as well as being comfortable with the person who's information is being disclosed. The next thing is trying to be neutral to the client when they have different morals and values than the therapist may have and try not to judge. The main goal of a counselor/ therapist is to recognize the clients issues and to try and find a resolution to their problems. In this situation, the therapist has to come up with their own counseling style.
In response to Alena, I liked how you mentioned the challenges that therapist or counselors face in their job field. Some of them are effected by what their clients tells them that it start to affect their personal lives. So they would need to find a way to balance their personal life and career. I also liked the point you made about how the counselor should come up with their own counseling style because every body is different and what worked for client one, might not work for client two.
in response to Alena, counselors having their own unique style on providing services to their clients is what makes them special. I agree what might work for one client may not for another. I also agree with the part about the counselors not breaking the silence and letting the client feel comfortable.
In response to Alena,I like how you mentioned the therapists is face with many challenges. I think one of the biggest assignments the therapists are face with is trying to break through the barrier of silence with the client. I think this because some clients might be afraid to open up to the therapists right away.
When i was reading chapter two, i agreed with the different types of traits that a therapist should be. And i especially agree with the statement the the book made when it said " Individuals seeking counseling are the ones who need to clarify their own values and goals, make informed decisions, choose a course of action, and assume responsibility and accountability for the decision they make." I agree with this statement because a person that wants to help others should be able to help themselves as well. And their lives should at least be on the right tract. Also the things that they want to tell their clients, they should apply it in their own lives and see if it works or how it works.
In reply to Kambaja, Its very true that therapists should apply their advice to their own lives but many of them do not. Some will give you advice that they wouldnt give to their own family and friends. Some people tell you things that you may want to hear in order to feel a little better about yourself that you have felt the way you have. You have many therapists that do not apply their own advice to their lives because they believe( Im the therapist, and i dont have issues.... you do, and thats why your here)so its better to find a therapist in the beginning that may be open about their mistakes and advice they have given themselves just to see what type of therapist you are dealing with. Overall good summary!
In reply to kambaja,i agree with you when you say "you agree with the different types of traits" I also love your statement when you say "person that wants to help others should be able to help themselves as well. I believe that this is so true.
There are many theories, methods, and stratergies I agree with in chapter two, however there are many I disagree with aswell. For instance Personal Characteristic of Effective Counselors Theory I agree with the many attributes and charateristics Corey suggest the ideal counselor should possess although to me in my opioin and own personal experience most dont...
In response to Shabrita, I also agree with some and disagree with some as well. I believe the book is just giving you the overall ideal look of a very good therapist, but we all know in the real world theres always a risk in finding the perfect therapist the first time you go, to getting rid of that one and hoping and praying for the next one to be alot better than the other.
